The England and Wales Cricket Board have appointed Brendon McCullum as the new head coach of England’s Test team on Thursday. England Cricket took to their social media handles to share the news across the fans.
The former New Zealand skipper will take the charge ahead of the three-match Test series between England and New Zealand, scheduled to start from 2nd June 2022. For the unversed, McCullum is currently plying his trade as the head coach of the Kolkata franchise in the ongoing edition of the Indian T20 League. His stint his likely to end after the league stage matches of the tournament.
Kolkata is still not out of the contention of reaching the playoffs, however, chances of that happening are less likely. Thus, Brendon McCullum won’t be staying in India till the conclusion of the Indian T20 League. Apart from working as the head coach of Kolkata, the New Zealand cricketer has also coached Trinbago Knight Riders in the 2020 edition of the Caribbean Premier League. Under his stewardship, the franchise went on to win the title.
"I'd like to say how pleased I am to be given this opportunity to positively contribute to England's Test cricket set-up and move the team forward into a more successful era.” McCullum said in an ECB press release.
"In taking this role on, I am acutely aware of the significant challenges the team faces at present, and I strongly believe in my ability to help the team emerge as a stronger force once we've confronted them head-on.” he added.
"I've enjoyed several robust conversations with Rob Key about the direction of travel for the team and have found his enthusiasm contagious. I'm no stranger to bringing about change within a team environment, and I can't wait to get started."
"Ben Stokes is the perfect character to inspire change around him, and I look forward to working closely with him to build a successful unit around us." He concluded.
"We are delighted to confirm Brendon as England Men's Test head coach," Key said. "It has been a real privilege to get to know him and understand his views and vision for the game. I believe his appointment will be good for England's Test team.” Rob Key, England's director of men's cricket said.
In his International Test Cricket career, Brendon McCullum played 101 Tests and scored 6453 runs at an average of 38.64, including 12 centuries.
