Despite being dominant throughout the tournament, Team India failed to get their hands on the coveted ODI World Cup title. Often criticised for not being able to taste success in the major events, the Men in Blue have earned the tag of 'Bilateral Kings'. India last won an international event in the 2013 Champions Trophy but have been enjoying numerous bilateral series wins.

Rohit Sharma's team remained unbeaten till the final and a couple of batters and bowlers were among the top run scorers and wicket-takers throughout the tournament. However, they failed to rise to the occasion when it mattered most and Australia managed to silence the entire nation with a gutsy performance in Ahmedabad.

All the players including captain Rohit, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Siraj and KL Rahul were seen hiding their teary faces. The 2023 Asia Cup and World Cup witnessed Rahul's redemption and in a special feature on Star Sports' 'Believe', the wicketkeeper-batter spoke about how important it is to win the World Cup. He also described the players' "extra fire" to perform well in upcoming major events.

"It really doesn't mean much or 10 years or 15 years later when we retire we will not remember our career for the runs or wickets that we've taken or other bilateral series that we won. World Cups are the only thing that we will remember. So, yeah, there's that extra fire in us to go a couple of steps further the next time,” Rahul said.

Everything else seemed smaller compared to... - Rahul opens up about his extraordinary journey in the second half of 2023

Rahul played a crucial role in India's glorious World Cup journey. From 11 matches, the right-hander scored 452 runs at an average of 75.33 and a strike rate of 90.76, including a century. The first half of 2023 did not go well for Rahul. He faced multiple setbacks in the form of injury and poor form. The 31-year-old made a brilliant comeback in the second half and proved to be India's most consistent and reliable batter in both ODI and Test cricket.

"Yeah, but during all of this time, I knew there was pressure to come back and all of that, but I had such a bad event that happened in my life that everything else seemed like, okay, it doesn't, really matter. Everything else seemed smaller compared to, tearing your quadriceps and going through surgery. I couldn't walk for the first three or four weeks. I was on the walker and, then slowly started building myself up during all that time,” Rahul said.

"You can't just come straight back into the World Cup. The team wants you to play a few more games before that, just so that they get confidence so that you get confidence. All of that time I was like, okay, I'm just going to take it as it comes. I can't be stressed," he added.
