Gautam Gambhir was a great player for team India across all three formats during his playing days. Apart from that, he had a great career in the Indian T20 League. Gambhir also won two titles for the Kolkata franchise in 2012 and 2014 respectively. But, now, he came up with a huge statement on the former Protea batter AB De Villiers.
De Villiers was a great player in the history of the Indian T20 League, especially while playing for the Bangalore franchise. He did not manage to win a single title but his impact and big six-hitting capabilities all around the field were close to none. But, Gambhir has now claimed that AB De Villiers played only for personal milestones.
“Anybody could have scored runs in Chinnaswamy Stadium." - Gautam Gambhir
While speaking on Star Sports during the ongoing Test series between India and Australia, Gautam Gambhir said: "Ab de Villiers only had personal records in the Indian T20 League. Anybody could have scored runs in Chinnaswamy Stadium." He claimed that any batter can score such runs in a stadium like Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. The Bengaluru pitch is known as a high-scoring one as batters always score big runs on this ground. Speaking about these players’ careers in the Indian T20 League, Gambhir played 154 matches for several franchises.
In those games, he scored 4217 runs at an average of 31.24, including 36 fifties. On the other hand, AB De Villiers played 184 matches for several franchises. In those games, he scored 5162 runs at an average of 39.71 and a strike rate of 151.69. De Villiers managed 40 fifties and three centuries. He retired from International cricket in 2021. Meanwhile, in the Chinnaswamy stadium, Gautam Gambhir scored just 302 runs at an average of 30.02 and a below-par strike rate of 126.36. In comparison, AB De Villiers scored 1960 runs in 61 matches at an average of 43.56 and a stunning strike rate of 161.18.
Here is how fans have slammed Gautam Gambhir for his brutal comment on AB De Villiers:
Uncalled for when he is the mentor of an IPL franchise.

Controversial statement but he has a point. Just one example, RCB needed 68 in 7 overs in a 209 runs chase in 2016 final when he was batting. He scored just 5 runs in that match which was half finished by Kohli and Gayle. When he was needed the most, he couldn't deliver.

It needs lots of guts and shamelessness to criticize a player like Ab de Villiers.
