On 12 July 2023, Team India will play their first game of the two-match Test series in West Indies. Ruturaj Gaikwad is a part of the squad but he is most likely not to get a place in the final playing XI. Rohit Sharma already confirmed that Yashasvi Jaiswal will make his Test debut as his new opening partner.

Hence, Shubman Gill will bat at the number three position. Meanwhile, Gaikwad is yet to make his Test debut. In the recent WTC final squad, Gaikwad was one of the stand-by-player. But, after the IPL victory with CSK, he withdrew himself due to his marriage. Jaiswal replaced him in the squad.

Now, Rohit opened up about the CSK batter and stated that he has all the potential to become successful in the longest format of the game. He said: "Ruturaj has got all the potential to be successful in Test cricket as well, he has shown his ability in T20 and I am pretty sure he is looking forward to scoring runs for Team India". Speaking of his international career so far, Gaikwad has played nine T20Is and one ODI. In eight T20I innings, he has scored 135 runs while he has only 19 runs in one ODI innings. He last played for India in October 2022.

Meanwhile, the Indian Cricket Board shared a video on their social media where both Jaiswal and Gaikwad were seen discussing learnings from MS Dhoni. During that chat, Gaikwad shared the advantage of him playing under Dhoni for CSK and how that has helped him in developing his career so far. He said: “I feel I very lucky and fortunate to be able to spend time with him. I always see how a lot of players go and talk to him after the games to get his experience and knowledge from him…that’s when I feel I am very lucky as I am with him for two-three months (during the IPL). Whenever I need anything throughout the year, he is always available. He has been a major factor in my career’s growth on how to stay grounded irrespective of the on-field performance”.
