On 29 April 2023, Delhi Capitals (DC) took on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing IPL at Arun Jaitley Stadium. However, DC failed to win the game in front of the home crowd and thus, it was their sixth loss of this season. Due to Rishabh Pant’s unavailability, David Warner got the opportunity to lead the team this year.

However, they had a disaster of a start to the tournament by losing the first five matches. Then, they won their next two games. But, SRH handed them their sixth defeat. As a player also, Warner has scored 306 runs so far but the overall strike rate of 118.60 has been terrible. Now, after the SRH loss, the former Team India spinner, Harbhajan Singh made a bold claim about DC’s captaincy.

At Star Sports during the post-match show, Harbhajan Singh claimed that Axar Patel should be the skipper of DC instead of Warner. Patel is having a great season so far as he has scored 211 runs in eight games, at an average of 35.17 and a strike rate of 142.57. With the ball also, he has taken seven wickets. So, such consistent batting performance coming down the order and the ability to take crucial wickets have made him a top player for DC. In contrast, despite Warner scoring more than 300 runs, that has not helped DC to get a quick start due to his poor strike rate.

Harbhajan said: “This is the Indian Premier League, appoint Indian players as captains. Hand Axar Patel the responsibility. He bowls well, and bats well, why not hand him the responsibility? Warner just wastes deliveries. What’s the use of scoring 50 runs off 50 balls? You aren’t just assigned to speak English while explaining the reasons for your team’s defeat. When will your bat score a 30-ball 60?” Seeing the former cricketer taking such a brutal dig at Warner while backing Axar Patel, fans went crazy and shared their views on social media.
