Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir came under attack by several cricket fans on social media for describing Rohit Sharma as a better player than Ricky Ponting. Rohit is just one century behind Ponting's century tally in ODIs. Despite this, team India's former World Cup winner Gambhir believes that Rohit is better than Ponting. After his statement, the fans have been reminding him of his comment, which he made comparing Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.

“The surprising fact is that in the last four or five years he has gotten this many hundreds. Rohit Sharma before the last five-six years was not this consistent. He definitely got about 20 hundred in the last five-six-seven years. No, he is a better player than Ricky Ponting. Because Ricky has got a sh** record in the subcontinent,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

It may be noted that Rohit Sharma scored 29 centuries in 237 ODIs. At the same time, Ricky Ponting has scored 30 centuries in 375 matches. Rohit Sharma scored 19 centuries between 2017 and 2020 as an opener. It also includes 5 centuries scored in the ODI World Cup played in England in the year 2019.

Earlier on January 10, Kohli scored his 45th ODI century against Sri Lanka. After this century, the comparison between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli started once again. Describing this comparison as meaningless, Gambhir said, "You cannot compare Virat with Sachin. In Sachin's era, there were not five players in the 30 yards circle.”\

However, since January 2020, Rohit Sharma has not scored any century. Rohit Sharma was in his form throughout the World Cup tournament except for the semi-final match. He was the highest run scorer for India. However, India lost to New Zealand in the semi-finals.

Average-wise there isn't much of a difference between Rohit and Ponting. The former Australia No.3 averages 41 in ODIs played in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. But there is a drastic difference in his centuries column. Ponting has only six centuries in the subcontinent out of his 30. Rohit, on the other hand, has an even spread of centuries. Outside the subcontinent, he has 13 ODI hundreds and averages 47, only one less than his overall career average.
