The Asia Cup 2023 is all set to begin on 30 August and Team India will look to perform well this time around after a disastrous outing in the last edition in 2022. This time around, the tournament will be in a 50-over format and all teams will look to get prepared for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. However, there are some players like KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer who are still working on their fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru.
Both Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have already been announced in the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series in Ireland. On 3 August, reports were there that both Iyer and Rahul were most likely to miss the Asia Cup. But, now, the Times of India has reported that KL Rahul might get fit and be available for selection for the Asia Cup.
KL Rahul got injured during the IPL 2023
Speaking of KL Rahul, he sustained a thigh injury during the IPL 2023 clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) while playing for Lucknow Super Kings (LSG). After that, he missed the remaining IPL season along with the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the ongoing West Indies tour. Recently, Rahul shared a positive update on his social media platform where he was seen having batting and wicket-keeping sessions at the nets. The Indian Cricket Board also shared a positive update on 21 July in a released statement.
They claimed that both Rahul and Iyer have resumed batting in nets along with some strength and fitness drills. They even claimed of increasing their intensity regarding skills, strength, and conditioning. KL Rahul was last in action during Australia’s tour of India before the IPL. However, after Rahul’s injury, India have found difficulties in managing a player for the wicketkeeper and batter role in a consistent manner. Currently, in the ODI and T20I series against the Windies, the Men in Blue have options for the likes of Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Jitesh Sharma.
