Senior Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan will be in action as the vice-captain in the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. Although, it was not less than a blow to the veteran batter as earlier the selectors had appointed him as the captain but later on, they replaced him in the role of captaincy with KL Rahul.
Earlier, Dhawan led team India to a handsome victory by the clean sweep and a score line of 3-0 against West Indies in the recently-concluded ODI series. The selectors named Dhawan as captain for this tour of Zimbabwe too but senior batter and full-time vice-captain of team India. KL Rahul made a comeback from the injury.
The selectors then appointed Rahul as the captain and asked Dhawan to serve in the role of Rahul’s deputy. This decision from the management and selectors triggered the fans of the senior Indian batter. They slammed the selectors for this misbehavior with the reputed member of the team India.
He is one of the main players of this Indian team - Shikhar Dhawan on KL Rahul
Although, Dhawan never said anything against anyone regarding this whole issue. Recently, he was attending a press conference ahead of the first ODI in Harare, the 36-year-old was there at the conference as the vice-captain of the men in blue. One of the journalists asked Dhawan during the press conference to explain about losing out captaincy of KL Rahul eventually.
No doubt, the question had a complete potential of triggering a controversy, even if there was any other player except Dhawan, the question could’ve done its job properly. But the Delhi batter kept his calm and gave a very gentle response.
“KL Rahul was a crucial member of the Indian team and I am delighted to share the dressing room with him once again,” said Dhawan
“It is very good news that KL is back and will be leading the side as well. He is one of the main players of this Indian team. It will be a good outing for him before the Asia Cup gets underway. I am sure he will gain a lot from this tour,” he added later.
Fans also reacted on Twitter to Dhawan’s amazing reply and gesture after a question from the journalist.
Shikhar Dhawan said "I hope KL Rahul gains a lot from this Zimbabwe series because important tournament like Asia Cup coming up, he is a main player of the team and good to see him leading the team".

Bro Gabbar don’t forget yourself, you’re still as important to us as you were 4-5 years back. Indian ODI lineup is incomplete without you
