Team India made in-roads in the second Test against West Indies in the Queen’s Park Oval at the Port of Spain on the penultimate day. West Indies continued from their overnight score of 229/5 but were bundled out within 7.4 overs as the hosts could only add 26 runs to their overnight score, conceding a lead of 183 runs.
Mohammed Siraj remained the star of the second innings for India with a five-wicket haul, returning with figures of 5-60 in 23.4 overs. Debutant Mukesh Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja scalped two each and Ravichandran Ashwin bagged only one wicket, uncharacterizable. Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite remained the top-scorer for the hosts in the second innings with 75 off 235 balls, including five fours and a six. Three batters scored in the thirties – Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Kirk McKenzie, and Alick Athanaze as the hosts could only manage 255 in reply for India’s mammoth 438.
West Indies need 289 runs to win on Day 5
India came in to bat again as they scored a quickfire 181 runs before declaring in just 24 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma stitched a partnership of 98 runs as the skipper became the first wicket to fall for the visitors at the score of 57 off 44, including five fours and three maximums. Yashasvi Jaiswal was soon to follow his skipper as he managed 38 off 30, including four fours and a maximum. Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan remained unbeaten on 29 off 37 and 52 off 34, respectively as India declared at the score of 181/2. Kishan smashed four boundaries and a six in his quickfire knock. For the hosts, Shannon Gabriel and Jomel Warrican returned with one wicket each.
West Indies then began to bat in the final innings of the game. After a decent start, they lost two quick wickets in the form of skipper Kraigg Brathwaite who scored 28 off 52, including five boundaries, and Kirk McKenzie who went for a four-ball duck. Tagenarine Chanderpaul (24* off 98) and Jermaine Blackwood (20* off 39) are still out in the middle. Both wickets were claimed by India’s spin ace Ravichandran Ashwin to bounce back from his relatively quieter display in the first innings.
