The controversial dismissal of England’s wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow on the fifth day of the Lord's Ashes Test has sparked heated debate, with objections against the method of dismissal employed by the Australian team and equally vociferous defence of what is perceived as a smart play by the Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
Meanwhile, England’s captain Ben Stokes talked about the dismissal and said that if any Australian batter was in Bairstow’s place then he’d have a chat with the umpire about the decision. Stokes further added and said that he’d never want to win a game like this.
"If the shoe was on the other foot, I would have put more pressure on the umpires and asked whether they had called over and had a deep think about the whole spirit of the game and would I want to do something like that. Jonny was in his crease, then out of his crease to come down and have the chat. I am not disputing the fact it is out because it is out. Would I want to win a game in that manner? The answer for me is no," Stokes was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

It's interesting to note that a similar incident happened at Trent Bridge in 2011 during a Test Match between England and India. Ian Bell, a former England cricketer, was carelessly running between the wickets because he thought that his shot had gone for a four, but Praveen Kumar, who was at the boundary line, managed to save it without Bell knowing it.
When MS Dhoni, a former great Indian captain, collected the ball and removed the bails, the third umpire declared Bell out. However, Bell again came to bat in the following session after Dhoni dropped the appeal and instructed the player to bat again. The apex cricket body also declared it the ‘Spirit of the Decade’ award for great sportsmanship by Dhoni.
