BCCI to punish players who pull out of the Indian T20 League?

The Indian T20 league is unarguably one of the most popular T20 leagues in the world. Players from across the globe dream of featuring in this cash-rich league. Yet, despite its stature, some players have decided against participating in this league, and that too at the last minute.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several players have pulled out of the Indian T20 league. The ongoing Indian T20 league 2022 also saw a few players deciding to skip this season despite fetching a contract. Jason Roy had earlier released a statement where he conveyed his decision to skip the 2022 edition because he wanted to spend time with his family.

Similarly, Alex Hales decided to skip this edition as well. Thus, according to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI is planning to take hostile actions against players who decide to pull out of the league without a good reason. This was discussed during the Indian T20 league GC meeting last week.

“The GC has a commitment towards the franchises who are the important stakeholders of the league. They bid for a player after a lot of planning. Their calculations go haywire if a player pulls out, that too for flimsy reasons.

There will not be a sweeping policy that everyone who has pulled out of the ITL will be prevented for a certain number of years. It will be on a case-by-case basis and some research will be done before action is initiated. What if the reason is genuine,” said a GC member.

Players backing out damages the team plans ahead of a season. Besides, several fans have pointed out that players shouldn't put their names for the auction if they plan on not playing, or skipping the season. Thus, it will be exciting to see if these actions are put into action by the Indian board.
