Using someone else's image or voice is a long-standing issue, but what if the victim is a well-known cricketer like Sachin Tendulkar? The former Indian cricketer filed a police report with the Mumbai Crime Branch's cyber division, stating that his name, voice, and images were being exploited in phoney web advertisements to deceive consumers. The Mumbai Police's Cyber Cell has opened an investigation and filed a charge under IPC sections 426, 465, and 500 against unnamed individuals. Celebrities from India and worldwide have encountered similar problems when their voices or photos are utilised for illicit purposes online.

According to numerous media sources, Sachin Tendulkar's assistant discovered an oil company's Facebook commercial that exploited Tendulkar's image for its marketing and stated that the seasoned player approved the product. Similar adverts were also found on Instagram. The Mumbai Police Cyber Cell has filed a case in this incident under different parts of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including cheating and forgery and pertinent portions of the Information Technology Act (IT Act).

"We have noticed that there have been attempts to impersonate Sachin Tendulkar's attributes in an unauthorised manner for selling products and services not associated with him. These are being done with a deliberate and malicious intention of gullible citizens to buy unauthorised products and services online. We have lodged an official complaint with the Cyber Cell department and have highlighted these to social media platforms where such misleading advertisements are being broadcast," SRTSM Management Team's statement read.

For those unaware, Sachin Tendulkar's image or voice has been improperly utilised for advertising products, misleading web users. Tendulkar's team had earlier in 2020 issued a statement, claiming that they would pursue legal action against businesses and people who were utilising his name and image for commercial purposes without his consent. Tendulkar had filed a complaint at the time, accusing a Goa casino of exploiting a modified picture of him in advertising materials.

Last month, Sachin celebrated his 50th birthday. In international cricket, the cricketer holds the record for the most runs scored. His career stats include 34,357 runs, 100 centuries, and 164 fifty-sevens. In the history of international cricket, he is the only player to have scored 100 centuries.
