Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain, turns 51 today, July 8 2023. Dada, as Ganguly is affectionately called by his fans, was the President of the Indian Cricket Board. He took over as President in 2019 and has worked tirelessly for the betterment of Indian cricket.

Prior to it, he represented India for up to 15 years after making his debut against the West Indies in Brisbane in January 1992. Ganguly's career took off in 1996 when he smashed a century against England at the legendary Lord's Cricket Ground from there he never looked back.

Sourav Ganguly's career

In 2001, he led India to a stunning 2-1 victory over Steve Waugh's Australia, who were virtually unbeatable at the time. Following that, he led India to the World Cup final in 2003, when they were defeated by Australia at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

Ganguly was dropped from the Indian team for unknown reasons, although he later returned. The Prince of Calcutta played his final Test match for India against Australia at Nagpur in November 2008.

He made 7212 and 11363 runs in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, respectively, scoring 38 centuries and 107 half-centuries. Ganguly was also pretty much handy with the ball, at the international level, he took 132 wickets for India, including one four-wicket haul and two five-wicket hauls.

However, Ganguly is most remembered as a captain as he took over when India was still reeling from the fallout from the match-fixing controversy in 2000 and notably guided them to a Test series triumph over Steve Waugh's world-beating Australian squad. The former Indian skipper led both the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Pune Warriors India in the IPL before retiring from all forms of cricket in 2012.

For the 2023 season, he became the Delhi Capitals' (DC) head coach. Ganguly had little effect on the squad, which finished bottom of the table. The former Indian cricketer also returned to the commentary box for India's 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia.
He is set to make an exciting announcement on his birthday and has been building up something on social media for the previous several days.
