India and Bangladesh faced off against each other in the second ODI on December 7, Wednesday and it was the latter who came out on top on the back of a stupendous effort from the bowlers. Eventually, chasing a target of 272, India fell short of the target by 6 runs, despite heroics from Rohit Sharma, later in the innings.
To add more to the match, it was Mehidy Hasan and Mohammad Mahmadullah who helped the Bangla Tigers team put on the defendable total on the board. Much to the stupefaction of the Bangladesh fans, it was Mehidy who scored a century and lifted the team up.
However, concerning India’s chase, the team lost the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli early in the innings as they perished for 8 and 5 runs respectively. Rohit had to come in later in the batting order on the back of an injury that he sustained in the first innings.
Eventually, despite a great fightback from Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Rohit, the Men in Blue lost the match by 5 runs and eventually gifted the series to the Litton Das-led team. While Iyer contributed 82 runs, Rohit, who came in later in the innings, gathered 51 runs but in vain as it came in a losing cause.
In One-Day cricket, it's about partnerships: Rohit Sharma
The Indian captain opened up on his injury and the loss and admitted to India’s lack of intent. Clarifying that his injury was not a fracture, Rohit said that it is a learning phase for the Men in Blue and hoped to take away the positives from the game.
“It (thumb injury) isn't too great. Some dislocation and some stitches. Fortunately, not a fracture and so, I was able to bat. When you lose a game, there are positives and negatives. From being 69/6, allowing them to get to 270-odd wasn't a great effect from our bowlers. We started well but the middle overs and the back end is what's hurting us a lot,” Rohit was quoted as saying after the match.
“There are few injury concerns, we need to get to the bottom of this. Need to try and monitor them, because it's important to understand this. When they come to play for India, they need to be at more than 100 percent. We need to monitor their workload because we can't have guys coming in to play for the country half-fit,” he added.
As things stand, let us take a look at a few Memes that fans came up with post-India's loss:
