A few cricketers from Bangladesh who played for franchises in the recently finished Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023) chose to forego the major competition due to national obligations, and as a result, they are now receiving compensation. According to a report on Cricbuzz, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has given players who missed the IPL season, including Shakib-al-Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, and Liton Das, a combined sum as compensation. The players' compensation has not yet been made public but Sportstar reported the amount to be around $65,000.
“This is just a small gesture on our part. They did not demand any money from us formally, but we felt they should be at least partially compensated, if not fully,” Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) CEO Jalal Yunus told AFP. “We believe playing for the national team should be unconditional,” he added. “But our board will consider it case-by-case, as players’ well-being is also one of our priorities”.
Bangladesh will host Afghanistan for three ODIs and two T20Is next
Skipper Shakib and vice-captain Liton Das had previously been denied clearance by the Bangladesh Cricket Board until after the one-off Test match against Ireland in Dhaka from April 4 to 8. After the Test match, Liton, a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who received his first call-up for the IPL this season, joined the team but only played one game before returning home. Although Taskin Ahmed was not purchased during the IPL player auction, Jalal claimed that he had been given a spot as an injury substitute.
Talking of Bangladesh’s upcoming commitments in Cricket, they’d be hosting Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series. Following this, the two teams will also play two T20Is. Notably, the two sides played a one-off Test last month where Bangladesh came out as victors by a humongous margin of 546 runs. They’d be looking to carry forward the same form in the limited-over games. This would be their final competitive preparation before storming into the all-important ODI World Cup 2023 to be held in India. Coincidentally, Bangladesh kickstart their campaign against Afghanistan on October 7, 2023.
