Bangladesh has announced their 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 with a Group B match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka on the 27th of August, 2022. Bangladesh will play their first match of the tournament against Afghanistan on the 30th of August at the end of this month. They are in Group B alongside Sri Lanka and Afghanistan to compete with.
Coming back to the squad of Bangladesh, then the senior all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is back in the role of captain for the team in the T20 internationals. The management has named him captain for Asia Cup followed by the tri-series in New Zealand and the T20 World Cup 2022.
Bangladesh to play their first match against Afghanistan
The Bangladesh Cricket Board made an announcement on Saturday afternoon to end the conundrum which was there for the last few weeks. Actually, the board has clearly told Shakib that either he can play for Bangladesh or keep endorsing the ‘betting company. In a subsequent development, Shakib decided to end his deal with the betting company Betwinner News.
Before this, Nurul Hasan was leading the Bangladeshi team after Mahmudullah stepped from the role in the white-ball format. Nurul also missed the T20I series against Zimbabwe due to a fracture in the finger. Then, the management appointed Mosaddek Hossain as the stand-in skipper of the team and they eventually lost the series.
Now, the next big assignment for the team is the multi-team continental tournament starting later in the end of this month in the United Arab Emirates. Notably, the Bangladeshi board had missed the deadline for submitting the squad to ACC due to the issue of Shakib and his sponsorship.
Bangladesh will be among the six participating teams in the main round of the Asia Cup. The list further includes the likes of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, and a qualifier that is not decided yet. The name of the sixth team will be clear after a qualifier tournament commencing on the 20th of August.
