Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023) remained a memorable season for Chennai Super Kings as the Yellow Army won their fifth IPL title. They equalled the record previously held by Mumbai Indians under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. CSK’s season was largely helped by their opening batter Devon Conway who remained their highest scorer of the season with 672 runs.
Conway batted with great consistency for CSK's previous season. He stacked up his 672 runs in 15 innings at a stunning average of 51.69. He registered six half-centuries while his best score remained an unbeaten 92. Now, Conway has picked his all-time CSK XI, and modestly enough, he chose to keep himself out of the XI.
Devon Conway made a few surprise picks and omissions
He picked his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad to open the innings alongside current Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis. Du Plessis enjoyed a tremendous season individually in 2023. However, RCB failed to qualify for the playoffs which meant their collective season was yet another disappointment. Mr. IPL, Suresh Raina rounds off the top order.
He picked Ambati Rayudu in the fourth position and following him in the batting order was Ben Stokes, a pick not many CSK fans are content with. Especially because the star English allrounder has not been able to shine for CSK at his highest capacities. Albeit, many believe that he is not yet qualified to have a place in an all-time CSK XI. Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja are the two spin-bowling allrounders. Whereas, MS Dhoni, the skipper and wicketkeeper bats at number 8, another call that created much controversy.
To finish things, he picked three pacers. Albie Morkel leads the fast-bowling attack and he is helped by current star Deepak Chahar and former bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji. Conway’s XI has faced a lot of criticism. Especially because he omitted his current bowling coach Dwayne Bravo. Secondly, the team has no pure spinner but two allrounders. Moreover, the batting position of MS Dhoni is also not justifiable, given that it is an all-time XI we are talking about.
