On 24 June 2023, Zimbabwe took on West Indies in the World Cup qualifiers. Both teams came to this clash after winning their first two games. So, an enthralling battle was waiting for fans and the teams at the Harare Sports Club. Speaking of the match, West Indies skipper, Shai Hope won the toss and opted to bowl first.
For Zimbabwe, their skipper Craig Ervine and Joylord Gumbie came out as openers. They put up a partnership of 63 runs for the first wickets in 15.3 overs. Gumbie scored 26 runs off 50 balls while Ervine scored 47 runs off 58 balls. Then, Sean Williams failed to continue his form as he scored just 23 runs off 26 balls.
West Indies lost the match by 35 runs against Zimbabwe
After that, Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl stitched a partnership of 87 runs for the fifth wicket. Burl scored 50 runs off 57 balls, including five fours and one six. Raza played a solid knock of 68 runs off 58 balls, including six fours and two sixes. After that, no such significant contributions came as they got bundled out for 268 runs in 49.5 overs. For West Indies, Keemo Paul took three wickets while both Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph grabbed two wickets each. Both Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase also took one wicket each.
While chasing 269 runs, the Caribbeans had a sloppy start by losing two wickets for just 46 runs. Then, for the third wicket, Mayers and Hope put up a partnership of 64 runs. Mayers got out on 56 runs off 72 balls while Hope scored 30 runs off 39 balls. Then, Nicholas Pooran scored 34 runs and Roston Chase scored 44 runs. But, after that, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as they got bundled out for 233 runs in 44.4 overs.
Thus, Zimbabwe managed to produce a shocking result and won the match by 35 runs. With this, they are now top of the group with six points in three games. While West Indies are in the third position with four points in three games. For Zimbabwe, Tendai Chatara took three wickets while Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, and Sikandar Raza grabbed two wickets each. Wellington Masakadza took one wicket also. Meanwhile, Sikandar Raza won the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance.
