The stage was set for a thrilling battle between India and Nepal in the ongoing Asia Cup on 4 September in Pallekele. It was a must-win clash for both of them to keep them alive in the tournament. India’s first game against Pakistan was called off due to rain while Nepal got thrashed by Pakistan. But, the Men in Blue managed a 10-wicket win over Nepal and with this win, they qualified for the ‘Super 4’ stage. Bowlers shone with the ball while Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill put up a great show with the bat. But, the fielding was not up to the mark as that will be a headache for Rohit ahead of the big matches.
Here are three top stories from India vs Nepal, Match 5, Asia Cup 2023
India's 3 dropped catches
India bundled out Nepal for 230 runs in 48.2 overs but their fielding was quite disappointing. With the first five overs of the game, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Ishan Kishan missed simple catches. After seeing that, skipper, Rohit Sharma and fans were left shocked. So, it will be interesting to see whether those players work on these mistakes as those can become match-turning moments in big games in the next ‘Super 4’ stage.
Sompal Kami and Aasif Sheikh's fighting knock
Nepal managed to post an appreciative total of 230 runs on the board after batting for 48.2 overs. But, Sompal Kami and Aasif Sheikh were the two batters who came up with some significant contributions. Sheikh scored 58 runs off 97 balls, including eight fours. Kami also scored 48 runs off 56 balls, including one four and two sixes. Sheikh also put up a 65-run opening partnership with Kushal Bhurtel.
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill’s match-winning partnership
Both these batters had a miserable outing against Pakistan. So, all eyes were on them when they came out to bat first. Initially, Nepal bowlers tested Rohit with some early swinging deliveries but Gill kicked off his innings with some solid boundaries. However, after 2.1 overs, the match was reduced to 23 overs and India were asked to chase down 145 runs. But, Rohit and Gill were in a different mood as they put up a century stand in 82 balls. Finally, they (Rohit 74* runs, Gill 67* runs) put up a partnership of 147* runs for the first wicket and India won the game by 10 wickets.
