After losing to Pakistan, team India played their second match of the Super Four round against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. India managed to score 173 runs in the first innings. They didn’t make a great start as both KL Rahul (6) and Virat Kohli (0) got out cheaply. At the end of 3 overs, India were tottering at 13 for 2 and they needed to rebuild and get the team back into the game.
Suryakumar Yadav then joined Rohit Sharma and the duo made a stellar recovery. Both played cautiously in the first couple of overs before changing gears and turning the momentum.
Skipper Rohit Sharma was the aggressor of the two, while Suryakumar Yadav was happy to play as the second fiddle. Sharma went on to play a sensational knock of 71 runs in 41 balls, including 5 fours and 4 sixes. His knock ended in the 13th over but the Indian skipper had done his job by then.
However, Sri Lanka came back strongly and picked wickets in quick succession. Suryakumar Yadav (34) followed him soon, while the likes of Pant (17), Hardik Pandya (17), and Hooda (3) couldn’t finish strongly as well. As a result, India were restricted to 173 runs at the end of the first innings.
In response to the target, Sri Lanka started on a brilliant note as Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis stitched a 97-run partnership for the opening wicket and laid a strong foundation for the run chase.
India couldn’t get a single wicket in the first half of the innings. Yuzvendra Chahal finally got the team their first wicket in the form of Nissanka (52) in the 12th over. Ashwin also joined the party removing Danushka Gunathilaka in the 14th over. Chahal got another wicket removing the dangerous Mendis. Sri Lanka, suddently, were four down for 110 after 14.1 overs.
However, Rajapaksa and Shanaka then joined hands and stayed till the end. The duo stitched an unbeaten 64-run partnership to guide the team home in the 19.5 overs in the end. With that defeat, their chances of reaching the final is now hanging by a thread. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have sealed their spot in the final. Meanwhile, the fans on Twitter have come up with numerous memes. Here's a look at some of them:
