Two arch-nemesis India and Pakistan will lock horns in their first match of the campaign in the Asia Cup 2022. Both teams will play this match today i.e., on the 28th of August (Sunday) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Interestingly, it will be the first time when these two Asian giants will be facing each other after their previous clash in the T20 World Cup 2021.
Speaking of a cricket match between India and Pakistan, then it is something more than just a game. The emotions from both sides are very high from both the sides either they are the cricket fans or the cricketers themselves on the field. Sometimes, the emotions have gone so high in the Indo-Pak clash that players of both teams ended up involved in an altercation with each other.
So, here we’ll have a look at the three infamous fights on the field during a match between India and Pakistan.
Gautam Gambhir – Shahid Afridi (2007)
India and Pakistan were playing against each other in an ODI series 15 years back in the year 2007. A heated moment occurred in a match of the series when former legendary Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi was bowling to former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. They both went into an altercation during an over of Afridi.
Gambhir played the ball from Afridi towards the boundary and after hitting the shot he ran for a single. But the southpaw collided with Afridi, it didn’t go down well with the Pakistani all-rounder and they ended up in a heated argument on the pitch. Lastly, the umpire had to intervene between the two to separate them.
Harbhajan Singh – Shoaib Akhtar (2010)
Former legendary Pakistani pacer Shoaib Akhtar and veteran Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh are known as very good friends. But something else also happened between these two on the field that nobody expected. India and Pakistan were playing in a match during the Asia Cup 2010 and that was a must-win encounter for both teams.
Akhtar was bowling the last over while Harbhajan Singh was on strike during India’s run-chase. Harbhajan happened to smash a huge six on the ball of Shoaib Akhtar, this kind of treatment went on to hurt the ace Pakistani speedster and he got engaged in an argument with Harbhajan Singh. Later on, India defeated the Pakistani team in that match and advanced ahead in that edition of the Asia Cup.
Gautam Gambhir – Kamran Akmal (2010)
India and Pakistan were facing each other in the match of Asia Cup 2010. Gautam Gambhir was batting alongside skipper MS Dhoni in the middle. Pakistani wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal went on to appeal on a ball that he caught on the bowling of a spinner. But umpire didn’t respond to Akmal’s appeal, and gave no reaction.
Although, Kamran Akmal’s over-enthusiastic appeal went very unpleasant with Gautam Gambhir. It resulted in a heated argument between Gambhir and Akmal.
“I had tried to play and missed it fully, he appealed in such a way that he thought that the ball hit the bat. Then I told him that there is no point in appealing because nothing like that happened, we just got into a heated argument and then it just got from bad to worse,” said Gambhir during a chat show in 2016 while recalling the incident.
