Out of favor Pakistani batter Asad Shafiq has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The 37-year-old announced this decision on Monday pulling the curtains on a career that spanned over 16 years.
Asad Shafiq is now set to enter a new innings as he is likely to become part of the selection committee. The news was confirmed by the former Pakistan player himself when he was announcing his decision to retire.
Asad Shafiq bids adieu to international cricket –
It was the end of an era for Pakistan Cricket as Asad Shafiq decided to hang up his boots. This decision came after the right-handed batter led his state side to a win in the T20 National title.
Speaking to the media Asad Shafiq said “I am not feeling the same excitement and passion playing cricket, and neither do I have the same fitness levels required for International cricket. Which is why I decided to say goodbye to all forms of cricket”
Asad Shafiq was primarily a test batter with an impeccable patience level in the crease. In 77- test matches, Asad Shafiq scored 4660 runs with a best of 137 which was his best score. The former Pakistani batter has hit 12 centuries and 27 half-centuries with an average of 38.
His final test came in 2020 during the tour of England in Southampton post which he was dropped. The 37-year-old has also played 77 ODI games scoring 1336 runs with a best of 84 as well as 10 T20I games for his national side.
In 191 first-class, Asad Shafiq scored 12042 runs with 31 centuries and 63 fifties with a best of 223. Asad Shafiq also picked 3 wickets in test cricket with his off-spin bowling in his long test career.
Speaking about his future in the game, Asad Shafiq is set to join the national selection committee. “I have got the contract from the board, and I am looking at it and hopefully it will be processed soon”
Pakistan Cricket Team is currently in Australia and set to play the first test match on Thursday in Perth. The second game will be in Melbourne with the third to be held in Sydney. The game in Sydney will be the final test match for David Warner who is set to hang up his boots from the longest format of the game.
