India suffered an embarrassing 209-run loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final on June 11 at The Oval against Australia. The Men in Blue qualified for the second consecutive time in the WTC final but could not manage to win in any of them. They were defeated by New Zealand in the 2019-21 edition.

Meanwhile, India’s star opener Shubman Gill was recently spotted with Manchester City’s star footballer Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne who recently won the Champions League 2023 after defeating Inter Milan in the final match on June 11. They also became the only second English team to win the Treble as well. Gill shared the images on his Twitter account after which he was brutally trolled by the fans on social media.

Shubman Gill failed to perform in the WTC final

Fans had a lot of expectations from Gill who was in a red-hot form during the recently concluded Indian Premier League 2023 where he scored 890 runs in just 17 matches in which 3 centuries were also included but the 23-year-old batter was a failure in the WTC final. He scored 13 and 18 runs in the 1st and 2nd innings respectively.

However, he was quite unlucky during his 2nd innings dismissal when Cameron Green took a controversial catch of Gill at the slips. After this, Gill took to social media and expressed his disappointment on social media. He criticised the 3rd umpire’s decision after which he was fined 15% of his match fee.

"India's Shubman Gill will face a sanction for appearing to criticise the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. The young opener was fined a further 15 percent of his match fee," the statement read.
