The Cape Town pitch for the second Test between India and South Africa at Newlands has been deemed 'unsatisfactory' by the Apex Cricket Council (ACC). The Test, which concluded in just 107 overs, also holds the distinction of being the shortest in the history of the format, breaking a 92-year-old record set in 1932. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has a 14-day window to file an appeal against the sanction. The venue where the pitches are rated as 'unsatisfactory' receives one demerit point.
If a venue reaches a total of 6 demerit points, it faces a 12-month ban from hosting international cricket. If a venue accumulates 12 demerit points, it is prohibited from hosting international cricket for a period of 24 months. The Match Referee Chris Broad stated in his report that the Newlands pitch posed a considerable challenge for batting due to the uneven bounce observed throughout the match.
“The pitch in Newlands was very difficult to bat on. The ball bounced quickly and sometimes alarmingly throughout the match, making it difficult to play shots. Several batters were hit on the gloves and many wickets also fell due to the awkward bounce,” Broad was quoted as saying as per India Today.
India won the Test match by seven wickets
After winning the toss, South Africa suffered a collapse and were bowled out for 55 in just 23.2 overs during the first session of the opening day. Mohammed Siraj played a crucial role, taking 6 wickets for 15 runs in 9 overs. Subsequently, India managed to secure a lead of 98 runs in the first innings but faced their own collapse, going from 153 for 4 in 33 overs to losing their last 6 wickets without adding any runs on the board, all within 11 balls.
