Sri Lanka veteran Angelo Mathews has been more prone to injuries over the last few years. He made a comeback to Sri Lanka's Test team for the West Indies series and fared decently in the opening Test match as well. But his injury issues were back in the second Test as Mathews sustained quadriceps strain injury while batting in the first innings and had to walk back.
He didn't take the field when West Indies were back and only batted at nine for Sri Lanka in their second innings. Mathews didn't look comfortable during his short stay at the crease and won't be taking the field to defend the score on the final day either.
The injury, meanwhile, is more serious than anyone thought initially and Angelo Mathews might end up missing the entire season of the upcoming Lanka Premier League which is scheduled to start from December 5. Mathews had hoped to miss only three or four matches of the tournament but the Sri Lanka Cricket doctors feel the batter could end up sitting at home during the competition.
"One MRI scan has been conducted, but the results are not clear. We'll need to conduct another MRI around December 4, and we'll have a clearer picture. The results of that second test will also be shared with consulting physicians based overseas," SLC's chief medical officer Dr. Daminda Attanayake told ESPNcricinfo.
In the LPL, he is slated to feature for Colombo Stars franchise possibly as the captain but not officially confirmed as of now. But the team might have to think of some other player to lead the side if Mathews is entirely ruled out of the season.
