India won their ninth SAFF Championship in history on Tuesday night as the Blue Tiger got past Kuwait 5-4 on penalties after 120 minutes of intense football could not decide a winner. This was India’s second consecutive success in penalty shootouts after getting past Lebanon 4-2 in a shootout in the semifinal stages of the same competition. India’s goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu remained the star who produced the match-winning save.

Notably, a few cricketers including Deepak Chahar his wife Jaya Bharadwaj, and Shreyas Iyer were spotted in the crowd during the coveted final. The two cricketers cheered their teams on and were seen rejoicing upon India’s victory in the SAFF Championship final.

The game was won on penalties after regulation time concluded with a score of 1-1 and neither team was able to score in overtime. Hajjeia, the captain of Kuwait, missed the crucial penalty shot in sudden death. AIFF Player of the Year Lallianzuala Chhangte tied the score for India in the penultimate second of regulation after Shabaib Al Khaldi had given Kuwait's football team the lead earlier in the first quarter (14').

Notably, both Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar were troubled by injury problems. While Iyer remained sidelined for the entire IPL 2023, Chahar made his comeback in IPL 2023 following his absence in IPL 2022. However, Iyer could not get fit in time to be a part of the upcoming tour of the West Indies. This raises his concerns regarding his fitness for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, starting in October.

Talking of Chahar, he was not made a part of the upcoming tour of the West Indies which indirectly points towards the fact that he is surplus to requirements for the Indian team at the moment. India open their campaign in the coveted ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia on October 8. However, the headliner event continues to be the top-tier clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 15.
