Mumbai continue to wait for their first victory of the Indian T20 league 2022 as the Punjab-based franchise beat them by 12 runs. The Rohit Sharma-led side have now lost five games in the 2022 edition so far. Things don't seem to be getting better for them. As for Punjab, a clinical performance saw them win their third game of this season.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Mumbai had to face the wrath of Punjab's openers. Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan got their side to an explosive start. While the veteran decided to anchor the innings, Punjab's skipper played the role of an aggressor to perfection.
The duo put together a massive 97-run partnership. Agarwal was dismissed after scoring a brilliant 52 off just 32 deliveries es After which, Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone couldn't get a big score this time around, and had to depart for 12 and 2 respectively. However, Dhawan started to take the aggressive route after getting himself in.
The "Gabbar" scored a brilliant 70 from 50 balls. Post his dismissal, it felt that the Agarwal-led side wouldn't be able to have a good finish to their innings. However, Jitesh Sharma played a magnificent cameo as he scored an unbeaten 30 off just 15 balls. His knock included two fours and two sixes. Shahrukh Khan scored a few lusty blows as well.
Punjab scored a mammoth total of 198-5 in the first innings as Mumbai's bowlers failed to impress once again. Only Jasprit Bumrah was able to bowl at an economy rate of less than 8. As far as the second innings is concerned, Mumbai were reduced to 32-2 after 4.1 overs. Just when things seemed to be going out of hands for the five-time champions, Dewald Brevis played an absolute gem of a knock.
He scored 49 off 29 deliveries, and was unlucky to miss out on a half-century. Mumbai kept scoring runs at a good rate but were losing wickets at regular intervals. The onus was on Suryakumar Yadav as the likes of Tilak Varma and Kieron Pollard were unfortunately run out. He gave his side a glimmer of hope with a superb 43 from 30 balls. However, he too couldn't win the game for Mumbai. At the end, Mumbai fell short of their target by 12 runs.

Ishan Kishan is supposed to give such starts with the bat for MI. I expect better from him.

Punjab v MI again a thriller

Pehli hi MI ka record hai ki 200+ kabhi chase nahi kar paate, last season Jallad Pollard gave us something to be happy about
— Shrutika Gaekwad (@Shrutika_45_) April 13, 2022
We can’t even think of this chase isn’t it?
Rohit 20-30 karega, Ishan ka slow knock, middle order pressure mein ake Kitna karegi & we don’t even bat deep😂
Early to speak as MI can still qualify but Rohit on field looks tired and mentally drained like Kohli in 2017-19 seasons

When you've bought someone for 8.25cr, surely he's good enough to play more than a couple of games. Really surprised to see MI not showing faith in Tim David. #MIvPBKS #IPL2022

What a terrible mix-up between Pollard and Sky - Pollard is run out now.

Hope I’m proven wrong but all @mipaltan success has come from playing 2 overseas bowlers. One bounce one swing/Yorkers - desperate for this win 😭

IT'S ENOUGH!!!! It's time for out of form Rohit Sharma to rethink about his batting and captaincy for the benefit of team, it's evident from his batting and frustration that he's clearly under captaincy pressure, MI should now move on from him as a captain.

Shikhar batted largely as an anchor today, but the good part about that was that even then he was scoring at 8 RPO after starting slowly. Was 49 off 36 (RPO of 8.16) and then finished with 70 off 50 (8.4) when team's Run Rate was 8.88.

One of the better anchoring knocks.
Now Rohit will know what Steve Smith and Rahane used to feel playing with Unadqat... #IPL2022
