Following the Indian Cricket Board’s secretary Jay Shah’s recent statement on the Indian team not visiting Pakistan for the next edition’s Asia Cup, Shahid Afridi hit hard at the board and questioned the timing of making such a statement.
Reflecting on the good camaraderie between the two nations in the past year, Afridi believes it wasn’t right to make such a statement ahead of the highly anticipated encounter between the arch-rivals. He further hit out at the board’s secretary by questioning his cricket administration experience.
“When excellent comradery between the 2 sides in the past 12 months has been established that has created good feel-good factor in the 2 countries, why BCCI Secy will make this statement on the eve of #T20WorldCup match? Reflects lack of cricket administration experience in India (sic),” he tweeted.
Notably, at the Annual General Meeting, which took place recently, the Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah, categorically, said that India won’t travel to Pakistan to play the next edition of the Asia Cup and also advised that the tournament be rather held on a neutral venue.
"The Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue," Shah told media. "I am saying this as ACC President. We can't go there , they can't come here. In the past also, Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue."
The Indian fans, meanwhile, weren't effected too much with Afridi's tweet and, rather trolled him by remining him of bigger issues. Here's a look at the reactions:
Jay Shah’s bold words attracted a lot of criticism from former and current cricketers in Pakistan. The Pakistan Cricket Board also responded strongly by criticizing Jay Shah’s remark.
The Board stated in a statement that it can also impact Pakistan's
future visits to India for ICC events, including the ODI World Cup next year.
"The PCB has noted with surprise and disappointment yesterday's comments made by the ACC President Jay Shah with regards to shifting of next year's Asia Cup to a neutral venue," the governing body said in a statement on Wednesday (October 19). "The comments were made without any discussion or consultation with the Board of the Asian Cricket Council or the Pakistan Cricket Board (event host) and without any thoughts towards their long-term consequences and implication.
"The overall impact of such statements have the potential to split the Asian and international cricketing communities, and can impact Pakistan's visit to India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and future ICC Events in India in the 2024-2031 cycle," it added.
