Shreyas Iyer once again fell to a short delivery rising above his waist. He has been getting dismissed on the deliveries like this in the last few months. It was during India's tour of Australia 2020-21 when his weakness was exposed for the first time. During the ODI series, Iyer got out to a short delivery and looked like he had no idea how to deal with it.
Since then, whenever the right-hander comes out to bat, pacers start testing him with back-of-a-length deliveries. During the Indian T20 League 2022 and the South Africa series, the Mumbaikar was seen struggling against the pacers. Notable, he scored a much lesser number of boundaries against fast bowlers compared to spin in the series against the Proteas.
In the ongoing fifth Test against England, the 27-year-old started showing some intent against overpitched deliveries. He hit three fours in the innings of 11-ball 15. However, he tried to leave a short delivery from James Anderson going down the leg side. By the time the Kolkata skipper in the Indian T20 League could pull out, the ball brushed his gloves.
Sam Billings took a brilliant catch behind the stumps to leave the visitors tottering at 98/5.

This is a concern for the team management and the player himself. Iyer is getting tough competition from his city mate, Sarfaraz Khan, who is consistently scoring runs in the domestic arena. In the recently-concluded season, he scored more than 900 runs. Not to forget, the right-hander scored 900-plus runs in the 2019-20 season as well.
This is why it is important for Shreyas to work on his weakness and score big to cement his place in the team. Moreover, there are other players from domestic cricket who might be giving him tough competition. There is no doubt about the fact that Iyer has an impressive record in First Class Cricket. He averages 52.42 including 13 centuries. However, his dismissal in the first innings of the fifth rescheduled Test against England has led to several fans criticizing him.

I thought there is so much competition in red ball cricket and sarfaraz Khan can't play for India in near. But after the failure of shreyas iyer and out of form iyer. There is chance for sarfaraz Khan. Hope bcci give chance to sarfaraz Khan.#ShreyasIyer#sarafarazkhan

The way people go on and on about shreyas is absolutely sad ! As if all other players play with absolutely no difficulties. Think about his mental health. He is also human. Hope he never comes on this app.
