Gautam Gambhir hit the headlines once again as reports of him making a comeback in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) surface online. As per recent reports in Dainik Jagran, Gambhir is in talks with KKR for a mentorship role. However, the final decision will be taken by him and the Luckow Super Giants (LSG) owner.
Gambhir is a part of LSG since 2021 as their mentor. In the last season also, he was an integral part of the franchise. But, now, reports have also come out that Justin Langer might become the new head coach of the team as he is going to replace the former Zimbabwe cricketer, Andy Flower.
Gautam Gambhir won two IPL titles for KKR
According to recent reports of Dainik Jagran, the LSG owner went to England to have a talk with Justin Langer regarding the role. Speaking of Gambhir, he had a successful stint with KKR while playing for the franchise from 2011 to 2017. During his captaincy tenure, the franchise won the IPL twice (2012, 2014). However, after that, the team have failed to taste any success so far in the history of the tournament. Gambhir scored 3035 runs in 108 matches for KKR, at an average of 31.61. He also smashed 27 fifties. Speaking of LSG, they managed to qualify for the playoffs in both editions in 2022 and 2023.
But, both times, they lost in the eliminator eventually. So, some LSG fans found it shocking to see the sudden reports of the former Aussie head coach, Justin Langer replacing Andy Flower. In the last season, LSG confirmed their berth in the playoffs after defeating KKR at Eden Gardens. After that win, Gambhir shared many images and showered love for the Kolkata crowd. On Twitter, he wrote: “You know how much I love you Kolkata!” In that match, there were many banners where fans were seen with a request to KKR. On those banners, they wrote: “Bring back GG to KKR”.
Here is how fans have reacted to the reports:
