The second match of the two-match Test series between New Zealand and England took place on 24 February 2023 in Wellington. The Kiwis lost the series opener. Therefore, they were looking for a win to avoid a series defeat at home. Speaking of the match, New Zealand won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first.
But, the bowlers of the home side were on fire as England lost three wickets for just 21 runs in 6.4 overs. Then, Harry Brook and Joe Root put up a solid partnership of 302 runs for the fourth wicket. Brook scored 186 runs off 176 balls, including 24 fours and five sixes. The young batter batted at a strike rate of 105.68.

For New Zealand, Matt Henry grabbed four wickets and Michael Bracewell took two wickets. In reply, the Kiwi batter put up a flop show again as they got bundled out for just 209 runs in 53.2 overs. Skipper Tim Southee was the star of the show as he scored 73 runs off 49 balls, including five boundaries and six over-boundaries. For England, Stuart Broad took four wickets and Anderson grabbed three wickets. But, Ben Stokes took a brave decision as he enforced the follow-on.
However, New Zealand did not disappoint in their second innings as they got bundled out for 483 runs in 162.3 overs. Kane Williamson scored 132 runs off 282 balls. He smashed 12 boundaries. Along with him, Daryl Mitchell scored 54 runs while Tom Blundell scored 90 runs. For England, Jack Leach took five wickets while four other bowlers took one wicket each. Thus, they got a target of 258 runs. But, England got bundled out for 256 runs in 74.2 overs. Joe Root scored 95 runs off 113 balls, including eight boundaries and three sixes. But, his innings went in vain as the Kiwis won the match and leveled the series 1-1.
