Finally, the Indian women’s cricket team made its debut at the Commonwealth Games. It is only the second time that authorities have included cricket in the Commonwealth Games after 24 years. The first time, was the year 1998 when men’s teams of cricket-playing nations participated in the tournament in the 50-over format.
Indian women’s team locked horns with their Australian counterparts on July 29 (Friday) in Birmingham’s Edgbaston Stadium. Indian team performed very fine in the departments of bowling and batting. But eventually, the World champion Australian team defeated the women in blue with a close margin of three wickets.
Indian cricket fans took to Twitter for expressing their disappointment at the defeat of the Indian team in the inaugural match of the tournament. They also went on to suggest the management come up with some changes in the next match against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Renuka Thakur's brilliant efforts couldn't work for India in the inaugural match of CWG 2022
Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur decided to bat first after winning the toss in the inaugural encounter of the cricket tournament in CWG 2022. Batting first, the Indian team lost the wicket of star opener Smriti Mandhana on the score of 25 runs. She scored 24 runs individually out of the first 25 runs of the Indian team.
Then, India lost their second wicket on the score of 68 with a run out of wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia. Although, the 33-year-old skipper Harmanpreet played the captaincy inning of 52 runs off just 34 balls with eight boundaries and a six to her name. Young opener Shafali Verma also played a vital knock of 48 runs to help India in reaching a decent total of 154 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the allotted 20 overs.
Speaking of Australia’s run chase in the second innings, the Indian bowlers were dominating at the start of the innings as Australia lost their five wickets only on the score of 49 runs. Renuka Singh Thakur scalped four wickets by conceding just 18 runs in four overs. But Ashleigh Gardner took the charge with Alana King to cross the line for their team and clinch a win by three wickets.
Here’s how fans reacted to Indian women’s defeat in the first match:
A difficult loss to take for India. They should have won this.

Kudos to Australia and their batting depth. #CommonwealthGames2022 #cricket #women #indvsaus https://t.co/9Zxi4jnJqC
You can only lose a match after taking 5 opposition wickets at 49 runs, if your opposition are mighty #Australians. Apart from Renuka and Deepti, rest all the bowlers were pretty ordinary. @ImHarmanpreet #CWG2022 #WT20 #IndvsAus #Birmingham2022CommonwealthGames

Ashleigh Gardner's half-century and a crucial 37 (20) from Grace Harris helped Australia to a three-wicket win over India. #CWG2022 #INDvsAUS

Ramesh Power doesn't know what kind of spin training he is offering to our women's team. Simply go outside.
