Jonny Bairstow has been ruled out of the upcoming season of the Indian T20 League. The English batter was suffering from injury and has been out of the squad since last September. He was scheduled to play in the league and fans as well as the franchise were hoping he would be fine by the time the tournament began.
Matthew Short has been roped in by the Punjab franchise as a replacement for Jonny Bairstow. He had an excellent BBL season where he scored over 400 runs and was handy with the ball as well.
Here are three reasons why Matthew Short is the ideal replacement for Jonny Bairstow:
1) Recent form in T20 cricket
He was named Player of the Tournament in the current Big Bash League after scoring 458 runs and finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the competition - at a great average of 35.23 and a strike rate of 144.47 while opening for Adelaide Strikers. His finest effort was an unbroken 100 in a 230-run chase to defeat the Hobart Hurricanes.
2) Brutal powerplay hitter
He struck one hundred, two fifties, and an all-time high of 100* runs in the recently finished BBL. Short has 1409 runs with a blistering strike rate of 136.00 in 67 T20 games in his career. Punjab will be hoping that Short delivers up to the expectation when the Indian T20 League 2023 kicks off on March 31. He will be looking to come in the middle-order and do the damage as soon as steps foot onto the crease.
3) Handy bowler
Having a part-time bowler in the line-up can be handy and with someone who can be as lethal with the ball as he is with the bat, can be an excellent addition to the squad. Short is known for his exploits with the ball and is known for breaking partnerships at crucial junctures of the game. Short is an athletic fielder who can also bowl off spin to deceive the batter.
