The newly named franchise of Hyderabad was introduced nine years back in the year 2013 in Indian T20 League. Since then, the team has played under the captaincy of eight skippers. The list includes the likes of former legendary Sri Lankan batter Kumar Sangakkara followed by Cameron White, Shikhar Dhawan, Darren Sammy, David Warner, and most recently released veteran New Zealander Kane Williamson.
Apart from that, the senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and batter Manish Pandey are the two other Indians to lead the new-faced Hyderabad apart from Shikhar Dhawan. Hyderabad is the only team among 10 participating outfits that haven’t announced their captain yet.
So, the management would definitely eye on a few players to hand over this responsibility for the next edition of the Indian T20 League.
With said that, here we’ll have a look at 3 players who might lead Hyderabad in the 16th edition of the cash-rich T20 tournament.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Speaking on the grounds of experience, the Meerut-based pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the senior most in the squad of Hyderabad. He is playing for the same franchise for a period of the last eight years. Prior to that, he played three consecutive seasons for the Pune-based franchise team.
With 146 appearances in the Indian T20 League, he has scalped a total of 154 wickets with an appreciable economy rate of 7.30 including an average of 25.79. Talking about his leadership, the 32-year-old led Hyderabad in six matches in the 2019 edition of the Indian T20 League. Late on, he also led the team in the 2022 edition of the tournament.
So, having an account of leading the same time for a couple of occasions, the management might look ahead towards Bhuvi to lead the team.
Mayank Agarwal
The Karnataka batter made his first appearance in the Indian T20 League 11 years back in the year 2011. He played his first match for a Bangalore-based franchise against the then-new entrants Kochi. Since then, Mayank has made 113 appearances in the Indian T20 League to score 2331 runs with a century and 12 half-centuries to his name.
Apart from that, he also led Punjab in the 2022 edition of the Indian T20 League in 14 matches. The team finished on a winning note in seven matches under Mayank’s captaincy.
Given the prior experience of captaincy in the Indian T20 League, the 31-year-old senior batter might be a good fit as a captain for Hyderabad in the upcoming season of the tournament.
Washington Sundar
The young Tamil Nadu all-rounder might be a surprise pick when it is to captaining Hyderabad in the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League. Washington Sundar has 51 appearances to his name in the Indian T20 League with 33 wickets on his credit.
