Hyderabad under the captaincy of Kane Williamson couldn’t enjoy the expected success in the last season of the Indian T20 League. They could register win only in six matches out of the total of 14 matches they played in the 15th edition of the cash-rich Indian T20 tournament. The franchise happened to separate its ties with Kane in the aftermath of this horrible outing in the 2022 edition.
Later on, when Hyderabad came up in the mini-auction for the upcoming 2023 edition of the Indian T20 League, they had a budget of INR 42.25 crores. The management went on to pick some renowned and experience cricketers including the likes of Harry Brook, former Punjab skipper Mayank Agarwal, star England spinner Adil Rashid, and Caribbean star Akeal Hossain.
Meanwhile, the owners of Hyderabad also bought Proteas batter Heinrich Klassen who hasn’t had prolific stats to his name in the Indian T20 League. The franchise signed him for an amount of INR 5.25 crores. It also drew some questions about Hyderabad’s choice for the 16th edition of the tournament.
With said that, here we’ll have a look at three players that could have been a better option for Hyderabad in place of Klassen.
Dawid Malan
The prolific England southpaw Dawid Malan has some outstanding numbers to his name at the international level in the shortest format of the game. After appearing in 55 T20Is for the three lions, the 35-year-old has scored 1748 runs with a decent average of 38.84 to his name including a century and 14 half-centuries to his name.
Apart from this, Malan has impressed everyone with his performances in the various franchise T20 leagues. But, to the utter dismay of the cricket fans, Malan has appeared in one match in the Indian T20 League. Considering his stats in the T20I cricket, Malan could’ve been a great choice for Hyderabad instead of investing in out-of-form Heinrich Klassen.
Dasun Shanaka
The talented all-rounder and Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka left the cricketing fraternity with the way he went on to put all efforts into the upliftment of Sri Lanka in international cricket. Alongside his leadership skills, Shanaka was also impressed by setting examples through his performances both with the bat and the ball.
The 31-year-old also delivered a few brilliant all-round performances during the recently concluded tour of India for a limited-overs assignment. As Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup 2022 before the Indian T20 League’s mini-auction was held, it seemed that Hyderabad didn’t give it a watch how Shanaka led his team to a title win when everyone wrote them off.
Travis Head
The Adelaide southpaw Travis Head has delivered some crucial performances in a few matches while playing for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League. Speaking of his overall stats in the Australian franchise T20 League, Head played 56 matches and notched up 1375 runs with a strike rate of 132.59.
He also went under the hammer during last month’s mini-auction for the upcoming 2023 edition of the Indian T20 League. But unfortunately, the 29-year-old could get sold as none of the franchises invested trust in him. Even though, the orange outfits had a good opportunity to fill the void of an experienced southpaw in the squad.
