Zimbabwe, once again, left the fans amazed with their performance in the game against Pakistan in the 20-20 World Cup on Thursday. They weren’t great with the bat as Pakistan had restricted them to just 130 runs in the first innings. Sean Williams top-scored with the bat for Zimbabwe, scoring 31 off 28 balls.
However, Craig Ervine and Co. bowled their hearts out in the second innings and denied Pakistan chase down a small total. The seamers were brilliant in the power play as they didn’t give a lot of bad deliveries to Babar Azam and M Rizwan. Brad Evans had Babar Azam in the fourth over, while Rizwan went back to the hut in the very next over.
By the end of the first six overs, Pakistan had only managed to score 28 runs for the loss of two wickets. Luke Jongwe came on to bowl the 8th over and gifted Zimbabwe the big wicket of Iftikhar Ahmed (5), leaving the Men in Green in all sorts of trouble at 36 for 3.
Pakistan needed a partnership and Shadab Khan then joined hands with Shan Masood. The duo mixed caution with aggression and put on a 52-run stand for the fourth wicket. Pakistan were cruising into the stage at one stage, thanks to the partnership.
However, Sikandar Raza, once again, came to the team’s rescue and turned the tables upside down. He accounted for the wickets of Shadab Khan and Haider Ali in two consecutive deliveries and then sent Shan Masood back to the hut in his very next over.
In the matter of three overs, Pakistan slipped to 94 for 6 from 88 for 3. In the last 29 balls, Pakistan needed 37 runs with 4 wickets in hands. M Nawaz and Wasim Jr. managed to score crucial boundaries and took their team closer to the target without getting out until the final over.
The match came down to the final over as 11 runs were required in the last 6 balls. Nawaz took three on the very first ball, while M Wasim Jr. hit a four on the next ball. But things took a turn from thereon. A single and a dot in the next two ball meant 3 runs were needed in the final two balls.
Pakistan lost Nawaz and Shaheen Afridi on the next two balls and fell 1 run short in the end.
