England and Ireland went head-on in the Group 1 encounter of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The clash between the neighbouring countries turned out to be a thriller for the fans to witness. In the end, it was Ireland that won the rain-interrupted game at the MCG by five runs (DLS Method).
England won the toss and decided to bowl first in the overcast conditions. In the third over of the game, Mark Wood had an early success with the ball in the form of Paul Stirling's wicket. Lorcan Tucker, however, formed an important partnership in the middle with captain Andrew Balbirnie. The two batters batted well against an in-form English bowling attack, guiding the team to 59 runs in the powerplay.
They kept scoring runs and hitting boundaries as they put on an 82-run partnership for the second wicket. Tucker (34) was run out in the 12th over, effectively ending the partnership. Balbirnie (62), on the other hand, continued to play well and reached his half-century.
Ireland's batting collapsed after their skipper's wicket in the 16th over for a team score of 132. Mark Wood, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone smashed their way through the batting order to limit the opposition to 157 runs.
Ireland got off to a good start with the ball in defence, taking a few wickets and limiting England. The Jos Buttler-led team managed only 37 runs in the powerplay and lost Buttler, Alex Hales, and Ben Stokes for low scores. Following that, Dawid Malan and Harry Brook attempted to form a partnership but were unsuccessful.
Moeen Ali was looking to threaten the opposition when rain fell in Melbourne. At the time, England had managed 105/5 in 14.3 overs. England, it turned out, was five runs short of the DLS target. Finally, the clouds refused to part, and the match had to be called off.
