Every year the popularity of cricket is increasing and so are the innovations to attract the audience to this beautiful spectacle. The latest among them has been introduced in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 season – Electra Stumps. The colour-flashing wickets, previously used in the women's BBL, made its debut in the men's tournament.
Former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh unveiled the new stumps ahead of Match 11 between Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers at the SCG on Friday, December 22. In a video released on the BBL's official social media account, Australian cricketer-turned-commentator Waugh can be seen explaining the workings of the Electra stump.
Unlike the 'zing bails' which only light upon contact, the new stumps show off different colours depending on what happens during the match. Flashing of different shades and colour combinations indicates a decision, which may include a no-ball, a wicket, a boundary, or even the time out between overs.
How do the ‘Electra’ stumps work?
Out: Stumps will flash red and then fire colour
Boundary (four): Colour shift (all colours flash in alternate pattern)
Six: All colours move upwards
No-ball: Red and white lights scroll along the stumps
Between overs: A pulse between the purple and blue scroll

Jordan Silk's half-century powers Adelaide Strikers to cross 150
Talking about the match between Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Sixers, the former won the toss and opted to field first. Sixers openers provided a solid start but failed to continue the momentum. They were three wickets down for 40 in the sixth over. However, captain Moises Henriques and Jordan Silk stitched a brilliant partnership to be in the game.
Silk remained unbeaten on 66 off 45 balls and helped Sixers to post 155/7. Jamie Overton (3/23) and Matthew Short (2/13) were the pick of the bowlers for Strikers.
