Rahul has not been playing cricket for a long time. He played only half of the season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023. Rahul picked up a thigh injury before the start of the second half of the tournament. This happened in a match at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He then took a flight to England to undergo surgery.

His rehabilitation took place at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. Recently, Rahul made a lot of news when there were videos of him doing batting and wicketkeeping practice. Initially, it was believed that he might not make the cut for the Asia Cup. The Karnataka batter was also sidelined for India's first two fixtures in the multilateral tournament.

For the ODI World Cup, it was decided that Rahul would bat in the middle-order and keep wickets whenever required. When it comes to the 31-year-old's career, he has played 54 matches for the Men in Blue and scored 1986 runs at an average of 45.13 and at a strike rate of 86.57. He has hit 13 fifties and five hundreds.

Pakistan are through to the Super Fours of the Asia Cup after they beat Nepal by 238 runs in their first game and their second fixture against India was washed out. The Men in Blue will face Nepal in their second match.
